Challenging Globalisation

Globalisation has diverse aspects that affect the world in many different ways. Its process, that creates lots of negative impacts to Asian societies and beyond, is not inevitable; therefore, it should be challenged and reassessed. However, the challenges to the process of globalisation are not only to deal with its implication on Asian societies, among others, but also to understand the influence of Asian states and private sector on the current process of globalisation. As most of Asian economies are integrating into the globalising world, it has generated significant impacts to the Asian societies, lowering people’s quality of life. One of the current most remarkable impacts of globalisation is the world-wide financial crises which workers across the region are affected. The crises brought about more precarious and unprotected work. Flexibilisation of work that inherent to the corporate-led globalisation, on the other hand, has been imposed more intensively, causing more vulnerability to the workers’ livelihood.

AMRC has been made many efforts, such as conducting research and campaign with its partners in
Asia, to challenge globalisation, to have better understanding on the cause of the crisis and its long-term impact on the employment, work conditions and worker organising in the region. One of recent researches has been conducted in 9 Asian countries – China, India, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines – aimed at understanding the mobility of capital and the process of financialisation throughout Asian industrialization which affect organising and labour conditions. By doing this work, AMRC equips Asian labour movement a better strategy and resistance to the impacts of globalisation.
