Official data in terms of occupational accidents and deaths are not reported and the official statistics of countries in the region only reflect the tip of the iceberg and one cannot draw any conclusions based on these figures on what is the real situation at the ground. The real gravity of the situation is not known to anyone. Majority of the nations in Asia do not have reliable (if any) data on fatalities due to work. The figures on fatalities and injuries given by the ILO are just estimates and as we know are based on the extrapolation of data collected from the industrialised countries. In reality, the real figure will be much higher than the estimate. OSH accidents and deaths are therefore not being reported and completely below the radar and are not compensated either.

The growing awareness on OSH rights in Asia and steady growth of victims’ moment in Asia with targeted campaigns against the Electronics, Mining, Asbestos and Gemstone Industry. Using our existing strength of victims organising in Asia through the ANROEV network, AMRC is working on preparing a citizens report in this project on the data from the ground on the actual OSH situation in Asia. This study will be done both quantitatively as described above with data from the ground of occupational accidents, injuries and deaths and qualitative data by case studies documenting the lives of the victims to understand what is the situation at the ground for the victims and workers whose lives are marred by a hazardous situation, disease or accident at the workplace.

This project will be completed at the end of 2011 and will followed by a publication which will be an OSH community report featuring more than 6 countries in the region presenting the OSH situation at the ground across the region. The papers below reflect the inital analysis done by authors based on secondary data sources that they have looked into to gain a basic understanding on what is the OSH statistics avaliable nationally.
