Date: 6th and 7th January 2011

Venue: City University of Hong Kong, Academic Building, LT-7

1.      Background

In 2008, the Labour Contract Law has been implemented by the Chinese government to strengthen workers’ rights and regulate the increasingly unstable labour relations in the country. However, this initiative did not help forestall a new slew of strikes while China is on its path of economic recovery from the global recession. Consequently, the Chinese government has recently been compelled to come up with new attempt to pacify the disgruntled workers by trying to strengthen the workplace collective bargaining mechanism.

The aforementioned workshop aims to review the effectiveness of these laws and regulations in protecting workers’ rights, identify the possible obstacles to their effective implementations, and discuss what practical measures should be taken to further safeguard workers’ rights.
