Asian Labour Networks

ANROAV

The Asian Network for the Rights Of Occupational Accident Victims (ANROAV) is a coalition of victims’ groups, trade unions and other labour groups across Asia, all committed to the rights of Victims and for overall improvement of health and safety at the workplace. The industrial disasters of Kader and Zhili, that killed more than 250 workers led to a campaign by the labour and victims groups in Asia towards better health and safety rights of the workers and the victims. ANROAV was formally constituted in 1997 and now has members from 13 Asian countries including Japan, Korea, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Nepal, Vietnam and Cambodia.

ATNC

The labor groups participating in the ‘Asian Trans-national Corporation Monitoring Network’ have worked for workers' rights and more humane conditions in TNCs workplaces. They have played a vital role to expose business operations and violations of labor standards of TNCs in SE Asia, South Asia and China and have tried to protect workers' interest.

Past campaigns on toy, garment and shoe manufacturing have exposed many poor and dangerous working conditions. Most of AMRC’s activities targeted Western TNCs, which place orders with Asian TNCs operating the offending factories.

We recognize the limits to pointing out the problems of individual companies. Focusing on specific companies (usually well known brand names such as Nike or Reebok) has not taken us beyond consumer campaigns or critical reports. We clearly need more active involvement in organizing workers and communities rather than devoting all our time to exposing poor conditions in the media.

We understand that the diverse and complicated environment in which TNCs operate present particular problems that require a range of responses. We recognize the importance of placing emphasis on Asian TNCs.
