Electricity workers’ two-week strike

Around 1,000 technicians at the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) went on strike on 6 March to back demands over promotion and pay improvements. The demand to implement a promotion scheme was agreed by the government in 1981. The CEB wants to keep the old system of exams to govern promotions, thereby allowing it to deny many promotions based on experience, as specified in the 1981 agreement.
