27,000 public sector workers strike 27,000 government workers went on strike on 5 May in Quetta, capital city of Baluchistan. The wor-kers demand a 40 percent salary increase to bring them into line with other public employees. The Baluchistan government awarded a 40 percent hardship allowance to government employees working outside Quetta, but did not include workmates in the capital.
All Pakistan Trade Union Federation, 20 May 2002 Striking departments included electricity, water, sanitation, and the civil secretariat, which closed due to the strike. The government arrested 300 union officials and 1,300 employees were dismissed but the strike continued.
